Wifi attempt 234

If you’re reading this, chances are you have the internet. But the question is, are you paying the right price?

The internet market in New Zealand is a competitive one, with dozens of different companies (ISPs) all vying for your attention. On the whole there is little that separates them, however a bugbear for many people is outsourced customer support. There are still however companies in NZ with NZ based support staff.

There are different types of internet connections available, with different speeds.  If you’re not sure of the difference between Fibre, ADSL and VDSL we cover this off in a brief article here. Read on to understand a little more about what’s on offer in New Zealand.

BYO or included modem?

You will sometimes have the option of either providing your own modem, or using one provided by your internet provider. If you already have a modem it makes sense to use this, however you should note that there are different modems for Fibre internet. If you had one with an ADSL/VDSL connection, it may not work with Fibre.

Of course, using your own modem requires a little setup at your end, however generally this isn’t too complex. If issues arise however it can be harder to resolve, as it may not be clear whether it’s a problem with your modem or with the internet provider. Your ISP will of course not be as familiar with your modem as they are with their own.

The easy option is to get the ISP provided modem, this will have a simplified setup and normally is basically ready to go.

In addition, if you have any issues the staff at the ISP will be familiar with the device and likely able to provide better support. Of course, the drawback is it won’t be a top of the line device. For more complex setups or higher requirements, you will be better providing your own.
